Drones and ISIS Combat

rc drones

While the United States, Russia, and other countries want to use more modern aircraft, Ukraine does not have the same resources to train its soldiers on these aircraft. While the Ukrainians do have training on aircraft and vehicles in Western countries like Germany, they are not able to get the same training on drones in Ukraine. Because Ukrainians have grown up using older equipment, such as trucks, drones are easier for them. In addition, drones do not require "pilots," making them easy for soldiers to use. Drones also have an easy to use interface, much like those found in video games.

Aerorozvidka

Ukrainian military employs a unique method to fight ISIS in eastern Ukraine. They use octocopters that are equipped with thermal cameras for nighttime operations. Some drones have anti-tank weapons, and can light up columns. These drones are highly maneuverable, and can carry as much 11 lbs payload. Because they are small, drones can be flown low and over targets to drop munitions.

Originally an IT enthusiast group, Aerorozvidka has become a military air reconnaissance unit. Although the organization started as a civil drone company, it grew into a fully-fledged unit with its head. Because of export control, the Ukrainian government prevented Russian military planes from entering the country. Aerorozvidka relies heavily on crowdfunding and donations for its continued existence, since many of the components used in drones are made in America.

Switchblade

The U.S. military supplied Ukraine with the armed "Switchblade", drones that are capable of hitting Russian tanks hundreds of miles away. This unmanned aerial vehicle was developed by the US Air Force to meet Ukrainian requirements. John Kirby from the Pentagon stated that over 121 of these machines were being sent to Ukraine. It is unclear how the Switchblades will work in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

The Switchblade, a small drone, can be easily launched from a tube. It also has a range up to 40 kilometers. Unlike Bayraktar drones, the Switchblade can hit a Russian convoy from 6 miles away. These small aircraft can set up quickly in a conflict like Ukraine. The Switchblade has a much higher speed than the Bayraktar, the current U.S. allies.

Russian kamikaze drones

Recently, the US announced a $800 million military aid package to Ukraine. Part of that package is the delivery of 121 unmanned aircraft, called "Phoenix Ghosts," which are intended to terrorize Russian forces. These unmanned aircraft can fly for 30 to 40 minutes over large areas and are equipped with cameras and warheads. The Switchblade is a hovering munition weighing 5.5 pounds that can destroy tanks and armored vehicles.

These lightweight aircrafts are small and light, and can operate from any location, whether it is land, air or sea. A conflict like this is where every advantage one side has over the other in an aerial battle is critical. Russian kamikaze helicopters are a direct threat. This capability will be crucial to Ukraine's army, as it can break Russian sieges or attack command-and control nodes. These capabilities would be a huge liability for both the sides but a small drone could prove to be an asset on the battlefield. Ukraine may emerge victorious.

U.S. drones loitering

Russia began integrating ZALA KYB lotering munitions into its military arsenal. These drones can be used in the same way as bazookas to carry out lethal loitering operations. The use of loitering drones may lead to the proliferation of these autonomous killing machines in black markets. But experts and observers are worried. So what can the U.S. Do to prevent this?

According to Kirby, the U.S. government has dispatched more than 121 Switchblade loitering drones to Ukraine to help Kiev fight Russian forces. The Switchblade drone can hover in a given area for between 30 and 40 minutes. It weighs in at 5.5 pounds. It includes a camera, a warhead and a microphone. It's intended mission is to attack the opposition forces in Ukraine.

FAQ

Which drone is the best?

One of the most popular beginner drones is the DJI Phantom 2 Vision+. This model comes equipped with a 4K camera, which allows you to take high-quality aerial photos and videos. You can easily navigate this drone using its built-in GPS system.

What is the difference of a quadcopter and an hexacopter, you ask?

A quadcopter is an four-rotor helicopter which flies in the same manner as a conventional helicopter. It has four rotors that rotate independently. The hexacopter looks similar to a quadcopter, but it has six rotors rather than four. Hexacopters have more stability and maneuverability than quadcopters.

Can you fly a drone high without a licence?

The FAA does not limit the height of a drone. However, they do require you to register your unmanned aircraft system (UAS), which includes the registration number, model name, weight, size, serial number, manufacturer's name, date manufactured, and other information.
