Drones as a Weapon to Combat ISIS

The United States, Russia and other countries all want more modern aircraft. However, Ukraine doesn't have the same resources as the United States to train its soldiers to fly these aircraft. Although the Ukrainians have received training in Western countries such as Germany on vehicles and aircraft, they cannot receive the same training in Ukraine on drones. Ukrainians are used to using older equipment like trucks, and drones are easier to use for them. Drones are also easy to use for soldiers because they don't need "pilots". Drones have a similar interface to video games, making them easy to use.

Aerorozvidka

Ukrainian military employs a unique method to fight ISIS in eastern Ukraine. They use octocopters that are equipped with thermal cameras for nighttime operations. Some drones can be fitted with antitank weapons and can even light up columns. These drones are very maneuverable and can hold up to 11 lbs of payload. The drones' small size means they can fly low over targets and drop munitions.

Aerorozvidka was founded as an IT enthusiasts group. However, it has evolved to become a military reconnaissance unit. Aerorozvidka started out as a civilian drone business. Over time, however, it has evolved to a full-fledged unit that is headed by its own leader. Due to export restrictions, the Ukrainian government prohibited Russian military aircraft entry into Ukraine. Aerorozvidka depends on crowdfunding and donations to keep the company afloat, as many of the drone components are made in the USA.

Switchblade

The U.S. military is supplying Ukraine with armed "Switchblade" drones, which are able to strike Russian tanks from miles away. These unmanned aircraft vehicles were created by the US Air Force in response a Ukrainian request. John Kirby (Pentagon spokesperson) stated that more then 121 of these machines have been dispatched to Ukraine. But there is no concrete information on how the Switchblades will be used in the conflict in Ukraine.

The Switchblade, a small drone, can be easily launched from a tube. It also has a range up to 40 kilometers. The Switchblade has a range of 40 kilometers and can hit Russian convoys up to 6 miles, unlike Bayraktar. In a conflict like Ukraine, these small aircraft can be set up in minutes. The Switchblade has a much higher speed than the Bayraktar, the current U.S. allies.

Russian kamikaze drones

The US recently announced a military aid package worth $800 million to Ukraine. One part of that package includes the delivery to Ukraine of 121 unmanned aircraft known as "Phoenix Ghosts," which will terrorize Russian forces. These aircraft, which are designed to fly over areas for thirty to forty minutes, are equipped with warheads and cameras. Switchblade, a hovering munition of 5.5 pounds that can kill tanks and armored cars, is an example.

These lightweight, small aircrafts can be operated from land, sea, and air thanks to their powerful, low-flying, gimbal. Any advantage that an opponent has in the air battle is crucial in a conflict such as this. The Russian kamikaze drones are a direct threat. This capability will prove to be critical for Ukraine's defense, since it can break Russian sieges as well as attack command-and-control centers. Although such capabilities could be a liability for both sides it could make a significant difference in the battlefield and help Ukraine emerge victorious.

U.S. drones left to loiter

Russia is now integrating ZALA KYB lotering munitions in its military arsenal. These drones can also use lethal loitering weapons in the same manner as bazookas. These autonomous killing machines may be more common in black markets if loitering drones are used. But observers and pundits are worried about this. So what can the U.S. do to stop this from happening?

According to Kirby, the U.S. government has dispatched more than 121 Switchblade loitering drones to Ukraine to help Kiev fight Russian forces. The Switchblade drone measures 5.5lbs and can hover above an area for anywhere from thirty to forty minute. It includes a camera, a warhead and a microphone. It's intended mission is to attack the opposition forces in Ukraine.
