Future of Navy Drones

drone copters

The Navy is developing an unmanned aircraft system to replace the manned fighter aircrafts. The MQ-25A Stingray is an unmanned, multi-purpose aerial system that carries refueling and other systems. These drones will relieve manned F/A-18 fighters of tanker duties, indirectly boosting carrier air wing striking power. However, the future of these unmanned aircraft systems is far from certain.

MQ-4C Triton unmanned aircraft system

The Navy intends to send two MQ-4C Tritons, one to Guam, by the end 2018 to increase its presence in the Western Pacific. In April 2018, the deployment was announced. However, the first Triton crashed in September 2018, and the Navy halted operations while investigating the incident. The program is expected to begin flying again in 2019.

Blue Water Maritime Logistics UAS idea

The US Navy recently selected the Austin, Texas-based Skyways as the winner of the 2019 other transaction authority award for their Blue Water Maritime Logistics UAS concept. The folding wings of the aircraft will enable it to fold down after takeoff and before landing. This will make it easier to store and handle. Skyways was awarded the award after Boeing was initially considered. The drone's patented design has already attracted industry attention, and it could become a part of the future Navy fleet.

MQ-25A Stingray

The MQ-25A Stingray prototype Navy tanker is currently in production and will be operational by 2025. Because it is horizontally shaped and has a round wing-body configuration, enemy radar detection is reduced. It is more suitable for long-range missions than fixed wing tankers because it can land at sea and has a higher level of survivability.

UXV Drone Carrier Warship

While the UXV Drone Carrier Warship Concept is interesting, it will not be very useful. A half-flattop warship combined with a drone deck is a waste of space. In theory, it has been a useful concept. Is it even feasible? Will it ever be in service? How will it fit in to the Navy's existing fleet, if ever? What kind of budget will this project require?

MQ-8Bs and CS

The MQ-8B and C are navy drones. These drones are equipped with antisubmarine warfare equipment. They can also perform large-area multistatic, acoustic searches. The Navy plans on replacing the MQ-8 with a brand new version. This has been tested aboard the USS Anchorage. The MQ-8C's aircraft frame is based on a Bell 407-sized commercial aircraft. Most of the B version's Avionics are retained. It can land on any air-capable vessel, even in unprepared areas. The MQ-8C is equipped with a brand new radar system. The new aircraft should arrive in time for deployment this summer.

Electric laser weapon

The progress of the Navy's laser weapon systems has been remarkable. The Navy is currently at more than half its target, moving from 30 kilowatts (in 2014) to 150kilowatts (in 2020). The all-electric weapon does not need propellants or ammunition and can be used for as long the ship has electricity. The electric laser weapon offers many advantages over chemical laser weapons in the past.
